“Papi” Commentator Elbert Garcia provides tips on helping your child manage new experiences and maximizing your time together. Papi’s also discuss Parent Engagement in education & My Brother’s Keeper Project.
One of the great things about life is that you are always being presented with new challenges. It took until my late 30’s with having to develop the biggest skill I will ever need: fatherhood. Just as I was getting comfortable with my interpersonal and career skills, being a daddy showed me how clueless I am :-).
Seriously, fatherhood is a rewarding and complex journey. And in these modern times, the unique challenges facing Latinos ‘moving on up’ while ‘keeping it real’ bring additional elements to navigate to raise these precious children.
I have wanted to start a series of episodes about Latino fatherhood, or ‘Papi Talk,’ as part of our conversations on Rays Podcast: Latino Talk that will Change Your Life. So who better to get the conversation started entre nosotros than Elbert Garcia, an incredible father to my God Daughter Nadia Garcia. Elbert has a great passion for fatherhood and providing his mentorship to others around parenthood in this crazy world. It was a blessing to sit down with my compadre recently for lunch at 4 Food in Mid-Town Manhattan-the best organic burger joint ever! We talked about our kids: helping them through transition and maximizing the precious time we spend with them.
We also had a chance to share some thoughts on helping parents
Finally, some straight talk on how we all have a responsibility to be our “Brother’s Keepers” and reach out to mentor fellow men, who oftentimes, don’t feel they have the outlets to seek mentorship, advice and camaraderie.
Rays Podcast hopes you will get engaged in this and future ‘Papi Talk’ conversations.
